Zoloft Use Linked to Miscarriage

Zoloft (known generically as sertraline hydrochloride) is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI), an antidepressant designed to alleviate the symptoms of depression, anxiety and other similar diseases and disorders.

Adding to a long list of serious birth defects such as clubbed foot, cleft palate and premature birth, the use of SSRIs such as Zoloft during pregnancy is shown to also cause miscarriage.

An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (and reported in Time Magazine) discusses a study on antidepressants showing that 5.5 percent of the pregnant women who use them suffered spontaneous abortions as opposed to a non-antidepressant-using control group’s 2.7 percent.

Most studies previously conducted on the use of antidepressants in pregnancy did not focus on miscarriages. Conversely, this larger study, led by researchers from the University of Montreal, did focus on the association between antidepressant use during pregnancy and the risk of miscarriage. The researchers urged those physicians with patients of child-bearing age using antidepressants to weigh the risks of using the medication during pregnancy.

Overall, the study showed a 68 percent increased risk in miscarriage in pregnant women using any class of antidepressant drugs compared to women who had never used them. There was a 61 percent increase in risk among those who used SSRIs such as Zoloft.
