Louisiana Couple Files Suit Against Zoloft
Terry and Nelda Rolling have filed a Zoloft birth defects lawsuit in federal court in New Orleans, alleging that Pfizer, the manufacturer of the antidepressant, failed to warn pregnant women and physicians about the risks of birth defects to unborn children.
According to the lawsuit, Ms. Rolling took Zoloft while pregnant, and her child, K.R., was born with congenital Zoloft birth defects as a result of her having taken the drug. The Rollings allege that Pfizer violated the Louisiana Products Liability Act, as well as the “warranty of redhibition,” an action specific to Louisiana, the Louisiana Record reports.
The couple is seeking compensation for medical expenses, emotional distress, mental anguish, court costs and other issues.
Many women believed it was safe to take antidepressants like Zoloft to combat feelings of depression during pregnancy, but they later learned that antidepressants in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of drugs are believed to cause serious birth defects in their children. Some women who took the drug during their pregnancies are filing lawsuits against Pfizer, the manufacturer of the drug, because of the alleged birth defects caused by Zoloft.
